The Karatina Coffee Factory is one of four factories owned by members of the Barichu Farmers Cooperative Society. Karatina processes the coffee of 1450 co-op members. The factory is just outside Karatina town in Nyeri County, which includes the southern part of Mt. Kenya. Co-op members grow coffee on small plots of land. The average farm has around 300 trees.
At harvest, coffee cherries are hand-picked & then taken to the factory the same day. There they are sorted for any over or under-ripe cherries or foreign material which is removed. The cherries are then de-pulped & left to dry ferment overnight. The next day the coffee beans are washed, soaked, and then spread out to dry on raised beds for 7-15 days.
