Gachika was built in 1966 & is one of three coffee factories [washing stations] owned by the Kimaratia Farmers’ Cooperative Society [FCS]. The Gachika factory processes the coffee from around 2200 co-op members who grow coffee in nearby villages, each farmer averaging just a few hundred trees on 1/2 an acre of land. Coffee cherries are taken to the factory the same day they're harvested, sorted for any over or under ripe cherries, de-pulped, fermented, washed, soaked in fresh water & then sun-dried on raised beds.

Kenya] was bred at the Coffee Research Station for disease resistance & released in 2010.
