hibiscus/creaming soda
Roasted Friday 12th August 2022
Gakundu is one of four coffee factories {washing stations} owned by the 3000 members of the Gakundu Farmers Cooperative Society {FCS}.
The Gakundu coffee factory processes the coffee from 1262 co-op members. The average farm size is 1/2 an acre with around 300 coffee trees.
Coffee cherries are selectively handpicked & taken to the coffee factory the same day. The weight of coffee cherries received & the name of the farmer are recorded in the Cherry Clarks register.
They are then sorted for any over or under-ripe cherries, de-pulped, fermented, washed & sun-dried on raised beds until the moisture has reduced down to 10.5%.
SL28 was bred by Scott Laboratories in 1931 from various coffees from Ethiopia, Sudan & Yemen. Ruiru 11 was developed at the Coffee Research Station in 1985 to be resistant to coffee leaf rust & coffee berry disease. Batian was also developed at the Coffee Research Station for disease resistance & released in 2010.
