The Gatugi Coffee Factory is owned by members of the the Othaya Farmers Cooperative Society. Gatugi Coffee Factory was built in 1979 & processes the coffee of 500 co-op members. The co-op offers training in agronomy, community healthcare & education. Farmers selectively hand-pick ripe coffee cherries & deliver them to the factory where they are washed, floated in water to remove defects, sorted, pulped to remove outer skin & pulp, double-fermented, washed, soaked & then dried on raised beds until moisture is reduced to 10-12%.

SL28 & SL4 were bred by Scott Laboratories in 1931 using various coffees from Ethiopia, Sudan & Yemen. Ruiru 11 was bred in 1985 at the Coffee Research Station in Ruiru. The aim was for a coffee plant with high resistance to coffee leaf rust & coffee berry disease. Batian, [named after the highest peak of Mt. Kenya] was bred at the Coffee Research Station for disease resistance & released in 2010.
