— Kenya
Karinga Factory was built in 1983 & is one of three coffee factories owned by members of Gitwe Farmers Cooperatve Society. Karinga is a processing hub for co-op members in four neighbouring villages, Kimaruri, Karingu, Gachuha & Mugalwa. Around 500 co-op members deliver coffee cherries to this washing station. The coffee here is processed using the Kenyan double washed method. Coffee cherries are hand-sorted, de-pulped, fermented overnight, washed, soaked & then dried on raised beds until the moisture has reduced to 11%.
