KENYA, SOMETIME IN THE 1930'S A COMPANY CALLED SCOTT AGRICULTURAL LABORATORIES {SL} COLLECTED VARIOUS COFFEE CULTIVARS FOR THEIR TRIALS.

SOME WERE COLLECTED LOCALLY. FRENCH MISSION, FROM ST AUSTIN'S MISSION NAIROBI {COFFEE SEEDS WHICH THE FRENCH HOLY GHOST MISSIONARIES BROUGHT WITH THEM FROM ÎLE BOURBON, NOW LA RÉUNION}. OTHER CULTIVARS WERE COLLECTED FROM VARIOUS COUNTRIES. HARRAR, AMFILLO & GEISHA FROM ABYSSINIA, {NOW ETHIOPIA}. BLUE MOUNTAIN FROM JAMAICA, KENT & MYSORE FROM INDIA, SUDÁN RUMÉ FROM SUDAN & MOCHA & TYPICA FROM YEMEN.

SCOTT LABORATORIES WERE TRYING TO SELECT COFFEE PLANTS WITH TOLERANCE TO DROUGHT, DISEASE RESISTANCE, HIGH PRODUCTIVITY & HIGH QUALITY. THE COFFEES THEY SELECTED, WERE GROWN FROM SEED, CUTTINGS OR GRAFTED, THEN CROSSBRED. THEY WERE GIVEN THE GLAMOROUS TITLES OF, SL 1, SL 2, SL 3, SL4... ETCETERA.

THE SUCCESS STORY WAS SL28. ALTHOUGH NOT HUGELY PRODUCTIVE, THIS CULTIVAR HAS EXPLOSIVE ACIDITY, AMPLE SWEETNESS, PERFUMED AROMA & FLAVOURS RANGING FROM TROPICAL FRUIT TO RASPBERRY, BLACKBERRY & BLACK CURRANT.
