HONEY FINGERS March 12 2016

WE ARE 100% DEPENDANT ON COFFEE FARMERS IN LATIN AMERICA & AFRICA, WITHOUT THEM WE'D HAVE NO COFFEE TO ROAST & NO COFFEE TO DRINK.

WE GENERALLY BUY SMALL SINGLE FARMER OR FARMER OWNED COOPERATIVE LOTS WHICH WE PAY GOOD PRICES FOR, BUT WE'D LIKE TO HELP OUT A LITTLE MORE WHERE WE CAN.

WHAT WITH CLIMATE CHANGE & COFFEE DISEASES LIKE COFFEE LEAF RUST LOWERING PRODUCTION, IT'S NOT ALWAYS EASY FOR FARMERS TO MAKE ENDS MEET. MANY SMALL FARMERS GROW SOME OF THEIR OWN FOOD CROPS BUT GENERALLY DON'T HAVE SURPLUS TO SELL.

LAST YEAR I HEARD ABOUT AN ORGANISATION CALLED FOOD 4 FARMERS THEY HAVE A FEW DIFFERENT PROJECTS IN LATIN AMERICA WORKING WITH COFFEE FARMERS TO PROVIDE SUSTAINABLE METHODS FOR FOOD SECURITY.

AS A RECENT BEEKEEPER MYSELF, I THOUGHT THEIR CAFE Y MIEL {COFFEE & HONEY} PROJECT WAS GREAT. BEEHIVES TAKE UP LITTLE ROOM, DON'T REQUIRE A LOT OF WORK, HONEY MAKES GREAT MONEY FOR THE FARMERS & IS GOOD NEWS FOR THE ENVIRONMENT.

IN GUATEMALA 42 NEW BEEKEEPERS ARE ALREADY PRODUCING & SELLING HONEY. IN CHIAPAS, MEXICO {WHERE THE PROJECT HAS BEEN GOING FOR SIX YEARS} FOOD 4 FARMERS STARTED TRAINING 25 NEW BEEKEEPERS & FOUND THAT SOME OF THE ORIGINAL BEEKEEPERS GEAR NEEDS UPGRADING.

WE THOUGHT WE'D HELP OUT BY DONATING 50 CENTS PER KG OF GREEN COFFEE USED IN OUR LATEST SEASONAL ESPRESSO BLEND {WHICH WE'LL CALL HONEY FINGERS} OUR FIRST ORDER IS FOR 1035 KG SO WE'LL SEND OVER $517.50.

IF YOU'D LIKE TO HELP OUT FOOD 4 FARMERS YOU CAN DONATE USING PAYPAL ON THEIR WEBSITE HERE.

SL28 a coffee shop. October 13 2015

KENYA, SOMETIME IN THE 1930'S A COMPANY CALLED SCOTT AGRICULTURAL LABORATORIES {SL} COLLECTED VARIOUS COFFEE CULTIVARS FOR THEIR TRIALS.

SOME WERE COLLECTED LOCALLY. FRENCH MISSION, FROM ST AUSTIN'S MISSION NAIROBI {COFFEE SEEDS WHICH THE FRENCH HOLY GHOST MISSIONARIES BROUGHT WITH THEM FROM ÎLE BOURBON, NOW LA RÉUNION}. OTHER CULTIVARS WERE COLLECTED FROM VARIOUS COUNTRIES. HARRAR, AMFILLO & GEISHA FROM ABYSSINIA, {NOW ETHIOPIA}. BLUE MOUNTAIN FROM JAMAICA, KENT & MYSORE FROM INDIA, SUDÁN RUMÉ FROM SUDAN & MOCHA & TYPICA FROM YEMEN.

SCOTT LABORATORIES WERE TRYING TO SELECT COFFEE PLANTS WITH TOLERANCE TO DROUGHT, DISEASE RESISTANCE, HIGH PRODUCTIVITY & HIGH QUALITY. THE COFFEES THEY SELECTED, WERE GROWN FROM SEED, CUTTINGS OR GRAFTED, THEN CROSSBRED. THEY WERE GIVEN THE GLAMOROUS TITLES OF, SL 1, SL 2, SL 3, SL4... ETCETERA.

THE SUCCESS STORY WAS SL28. ALTHOUGH NOT HUGELY PRODUCTIVE, THIS CULTIVAR HAS EXPLOSIVE ACIDITY, AMPLE SWEETNESS, PERFUMED AROMA & FLAVOURS RANGING FROM TROPICAL FRUIT TO RASPBERRY, BLACKBERRY & BLACK CURRANT.

SEPTEMBER 26TH 1995.

WE FOUND OURSELVES WITH A 5KG TURKISH ROASTER A COUPLE OF TWO GROUP LA CIMBALI ESPRESSO MACHINES & A LEASE ON A SHOP ON THE CORNER OF HOOD & VICTORIA STREET.

OVER THE YEARS WE RENTED THE SHOPS ON EACH SIDE & A LITTLE SHOP IN THE EAST. THEN WE SOLD THE LITTLE SHOP IN THE EAST & THE SHOP ON THE CORNER OF HOOD & VICTORIA.

ABOUT SIX YEARS AGO WE MOVED THE ROASTERY TO BARTON STREET. WE STILL LEARN NEW THINGS EVERY DAY, GREEN COFFEE GETS BETTER ALL THE TIME & WE'RE ALWAYS TRYING TO IMPROVE OUR ROASTING.

SO THANKS TO OUR FAMILIES, FRIENDS, STAFF & CUSTOMERS FOR ALL THE SUPPORT, MAYBE NEXT YEAR WE'LL HAVE A PARTY.

MAPS & OUR SINGLE ORIGIN LABELS October 25 2014

WHEN WE WERE SORTING OUT LABELS FOR OUR SINGLE ORIGIN FILTER & ESPRESSO SELECTIONS WE DECIDED TO COLOUR CODE THEM USING THE COLOUR OF THE COUNTRIES ON OUR MAPS. WE HAVE A FAIRLY DECENT SELECTION OF VINTAGE, SLIGHTLY OUT OF DATE MAPS HANGING UP IN THE ROASTERY.

SO BRASIL IS A YELLOW, ETHIOPIA IS A PURPLE, KENYA IS A PINK, ETC, ETC. THERE DOESN'T SEEM TO BE ANY REASON FOR THE COLOURS & NOT EVERY MAP I'VE SEEN HAS THE SAME COLOUR FOR THE SAME COUNTRY. SOME COUNTRIES ON DIFFERENT CONTINENTS HAVE DIFFERENT COLOURS.

THE FRONT OF THE LABEL HAS THE COFFEE NAME, FLAVOUR NOTES & INFORMATION ON THE FARM & FARMER. THE BACK HAS DETAILS OF THE COUNTRY, REGION, FARMER, VARIETAL, ALTITUDE & FLAVOUR NOTES.

NEW-ISH BAGS, NEW-ISH BRANDING October 25 2014

AFTER HAND STAMPING MANY THOUSANDS OF BAGS IT WAS TIME TO GET PRE PRINTED BAGS & AFTER SEEING OUR "ROCKET" FOR THE MILLIONTH TIME IT WAS TIME FOR A LITTLE CHANGE.

{our original rocket designed by a stoner friend}

WE HAVE ALWAYS TRIED TO USE SOMETHING WE HAVE IN THE ROASTERY IN OUR LOGO, THE PREVIOUS FONT WE USED WAS TAKEN FROM AN OLD 60'S "COFFEE" SIGN THAT HANGS OVER OUR DOOR.

THIS TIME WE WENT FOR THE CABINETS OF OBSOLETE PRINTING TYPE OUT THE BACK. FIRST UP WAS AN OLD HAND CARVED "R" FROM FRANCE, WE PRINTED IT OUT THE BACK THEN HAD IT SCANNED & USED THAT FOR OUR 250G RETAIL BAGS & OUR 6OZ {PROPER FLAT WHITE SIZED} TAKE AWAY CUPS.

{printing our business cards on the asbern printing press}

FOR OUR 1KG BAGS WE USED A MANICULE OR POINTING FINGER & SOME OLD WOOD TYPE ORIGINALLY USED FOR PRINTING NEWSPAPER HEADLINES ON BILLBOARDS.

WE ALSO HAD THE POINTING FINGER HAND PAINTED ON OUR NEIGHBORS BUILDING BY OUR FRIEND BRENT.

burundiathon July 31 2013

Our espresso blend at the moment is 35% Colombian which comes from Association Los Naranjos in San Augustin, Huila. It is a great coffee on it's own, honey sweetness with fresh sweet citrus flavours.

watch this fantastic video featuring Association Los Naranjos, from Cafe Imports who sourced this lot.

Now for the burundiathon bit........

The remaining 65% of the espresso blend is from Burundi.

I've always enjoyed coffee from Burundi, it's small, landlocked & had it's fair share of problems, but the coffee can be spectacular, they have many washing stations where the smallholder farmers can take ripe cherry to sell, the coffee is then sold under the name of the washing station.

I received about 20 Burundi samples but there were so many I liked I couldn't decide on one so I got 7 different lots, enough for about two weeks in the espresso blend each, they are:

Kayanza Kiziba lot 4 {medium dark chocolate with baking spices} gone

Gatare Kayanza lot 2 {mexican milk chocolate} gone

Gatare Kayanza lot 1 {sweet, dried fruit, lemon} gone

Kayanza Kiryama lot 3 {citrus, sweet nut, chocolate} gone

Kayanza Bwayi lot 2 {sweet, juicy, floral} gone

Kayanza Kinyovu lot 3 {tropical fruit, dark cherry} gone

Kayanza Kinyovu lot 4 {rich chocolate, lemon, honey} gone
